Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court presented the Distinguished Service Award to Gerhard Casper, the President Emeritus of Stanford University, whose extraordinary service over more than three decades has helped to chart the Institute’s course and shape its agenda.
Justice Ginsburg developed a friendship with Professor Casper when they both served as directors of the American Bar Foundation, a relationship that continued and deepened during their 13 years on the ALI Council together.
Professor Casper served 30 years on the ALI Council and his ideas led to the creation of the Young Scholars Medal. He also served recently on the search committee that was tasked with recommending a replacement for outgoing ALI Director Lance Liebman. Casper, along with ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo and Chief Judge Diane Wood of the Seventh Circuit, recommended Richard Revesz, the Dean Emeritus of NYU Law, who will take over as ALI Director at the close of this year’s Annual Meeting on May 21.
In her remarks, Justice Ginsburg talked about reading Casper’s recently published book, The Winds of Freedom, and applauded Casper as an important figure not only in the development of the law, but also in the advancement of academic freedom.
